Store Review: P. Graham Dunn

What do you get when you mix ‘artsy’, classic, earthy, spiritually inspiring, rustic and simplistic?  A plethora of beautiful and unique artwork, home furnishings and boutique jewelry and clothing all combined in a very lovely, one-of-a-kind setting known as              P. Graham Dunn.

Located on Rt. 30 in Dalton, Ohio, P. Graham Dunn’s 160,000 square foot manufacturing facility and 20,000 square foot retail store are impossible to miss with their huge red roof, quaint fishing pond and vintage-looking red street lamps that line the gently curving drive.  Being adjacent to the state’s largest Amish and Mennonite community with all of its’ site-seeing opportunities as well as the massive inventory of beautiful items to peruse here, one could and probably should plan to spend a hefty chunk of time checking it all out.

What began 40 years ago in a re-vamped chicken coup down the road is now nothing short of an amazing work of art in the facility alone.  As you enter the retail store’s huge front lobby, you are greeted by a very grand double staircase of beautifully carved wood.  The massive walls are adorned with enlarged versions of their own artwork and framed at the top with beautiful oak crown moulding engraved with Scripture.  Given that the holiday season is now upon us, there is also a beautifully decorated 25 foot Christmas tree standing guard in the center of the staircase.

After ascending to the 2nd story showroom via the stairs or elevator, the first area you come to is where items can be personalized via on-site laser engravers.  As you wander further inward from here, you will encounter a massive selection of Christian wall art, home furnishings and gift items unlike any you’ve probably seen elsewhere.  Entire hymns laser-engraved — notes and lyrics both —-onto beautiful slabs of polished wood can be seen alongside other wood pieces adorned with stunning nature photos highlighting a single verse of Scripture.  Currently, a very large selection of beautifully unique Christmas tree ornaments is also part of the extensive inventory.  Of special interest to the ladies, is a fairly large “boutique” section filled with very “artsy” jewelry, clothing and handbags.  Occupying the entire back of the store is their “outlet” where items that are still very beautiful but perhaps have a slight flaw of some sort are sold at a greatly reduced price.  If you are someone who enjoys watching craftsmen at work, there are also windows located throughout the showroom where shoppers can look down into the manufacturing portion of the facility. In addition, it should be noted that customer service is also above average with employees very friendly, helpful and eager to please.

Without a doubt, this family-owned business with ties to the Amish community is a must-see for your shopping needs, holiday season or not.  A trip to P. Graham Dunn will not disappoint.
